Traffic film (or road film) is a combination of contamination such as road dirt, salt, oil, tar, insects, etc. Traffic film consists of a static and a dynamic part.
Static roadfilm is created while driving at high speed. While driving, friction and static electricity form an electrostatic layer. This is the most difficult part to remove without brushing the vehicle.
The dynamic roadfilm consists of dirt and grime that is accumulated onto the vehicle while driving. Examples are mud, insects, and salt.
The traffic film can consist of many kinds of pollutants, therefore the right selection of cleaner/detergent needs to be made. Mainly alkaline solutions are used to lower the tension of the surfaces to provide adequate cleaning results. These solutions are sometimes referred to as TFR’s (traffic film removers) or citrus prewash. Acid cleaner or renovators are used when build-up of minerals need to be removed.
